VACATURE - POSTE VACANT UGent: Academisch Assistent (100%) (DEADLINE 14 AUG 2018)

Vanaf 1 oktober 2018 start een voltijds assistentenmandaat binnen het Instituut voor Rechtsgeschiedenis van de Gentse faculteit Rechten en Criminologie. De vacature staat online op de vacaturesite van de UGent (https://www.ugent.be/nl/vacatures).

Solliciteren kan tot 14 augustus. Kandidaten hebben een masterdiploma in de rechten. Een extra diploma in de (kunst)geschiedenis strekt tot aanbeveling.

De job omvat het voorbereiden en schrijven van een rechtshistorisch (mogelijk rechtsiconologisch) doctoraal proefschrift. Daarnaast zal de nieuwe assistent ingezet worden binnen de werking van het rechtshistorisch instituut en naast onderzoek ook ingeschakeld worden in het juridische en rechtshistorische onderwijs van het Instituut.

JOURNAL: Giornale di Storia costituzionale/Journal of Constitutional History [Special Issue: the Belgian Constitution of 1831: History, Ideologies, Sovereignty] XXXV (2018)/1

The Giornale di Storia costituzionale is a periodical published twice a year. It was born in 2001 with the aim of promoting and gathering research and methodological proposals that concern the manifold paths of constitutional history. The articles here published intend to analyse - in a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective - the foundations and characters of a complex historical and cultural phenomenon which has given birth to a common inheritance, yet with different forms and conceptions. Between present and past, the scholars of law, politics, institutions, and more generally the experts of social sciences think and dialogue about constitutionalism, marked by deep historical roots and growing tensions. The Giornale has already become a meeting and reference point for the different practices of constitutional history, it publishes essays in various languages and is characterised by thematic richness and variety in surveys, alternating miscellaneous issues with others dedicated to monographic rese

The Department of Roman Law and Legal History is a part of the Faculty of Law of KU Leuven. The Department is focusing on the teaching of legal history, as well as on research on diverse legal historical topics. We are seeking to recruit a motivated PhD candidate in the area of European legal history. Under the guidance of the promoter, the PhD researcher will submit a doctorate within four years. She/He is a team-player who is prepared to contribute to the educational and societal mission of the Faculty of Law, and of the Department in particular.

Project
  • Preparing a PhD on a theme of European legal history, preferably concerning the learned law (ius commune). The PhD student and the supervisor will decide upon the specific research topic by mutual agreement. The candidate can include a brief research proposal in his letter of motivation.
  • Participation at legal historical conferences, writing of legal historical scientific contributions
  • Assistance with the preparation of aproposal for a research grant
  • Assistance with teaching activities (within predefined limits)
Profile
  • The candidate has – on October 1,2018 – at least one of the following degrees: Master of Law (preferred), Masterof Arts in History, Master of Arts in classical languages (or equivalent). Candidates without a previous degree in law have to be willing to obtain the juridical knowledge and skills which are necessary for the research and for the assistance with the teaching activities.
  • The candidate obtained good study results.
  • The candidate has a demonstrable interest in legal history.
  • The candidate fluently reads Latin juridical texts, or is willing to acquire a good command of the Latin language by the end of the first year of the contract, which should enable her/him to independently read Latin juridical texts as of the beginning of the second year at the latest.
  • The candidate has a good command of different languages, in particular a very good active and passive command of Dutch and English, and at least a good passive command of French and German (or the commitment to improve her/his skills in those languages). A good command of other languages, in particular Italian and Spanish, is an added value.
  • Experience with paleography is not a must, but it is an added value.
Offer
A (four-year) PhD fellowship as of October 1, 2018: one-year contract, which upon positive evaluation is extended for another year, and after a second positive evaluation for a final period of two years. The PhD candidate will work in Leuven.
